SESSION 27: EXERCISES FOR DISCUSSION AND FINAL TASK

SESSION 27: EXERCISES FOR DISCUSSION AND FINAL TASK

2.1 POSITIVE DISCRIMINATION:
  • How can discrimination be positive?
  • Why do women need a handicap in everything?
  • Are they saying that women are so inferior that they need a handicap in everything?
Have a look at this video:
NIKKI SINCLAIRE MEP CALLS FOR A STOP TO POSITIVE DISCRIMINATION FOR WOMEN

It´s very important to read the comments made in the 'DESCRIPTION' of the video,

MEP Nikki Sinclaire chose International Women's Day to suggest the EU should put a stop to positive discrimination for women.
In a speech at the Strasbourg parliament today, Nikki declared her belief that the European Parliament had lost touch with reality. The MEP stated that she is against discrimination of any kind -- even positive -- as it inevitably leads to the creation of victims. She cited a report tabled in Parliament this week by Rovana Plumb calling for positive discrimination in 'social, economic and political life' as well as education.
She referred to a report tabled in the Parliament this week by Rovana Plumb calling for positive discrimination in "social, economic, and political life", and also in education.
Plumb also suggests that member states revise their immigration policies in order to allow female immigrants easier access to employment.
The West Midlands' independent MEP added that women do not need to be patronized by quotas and, instead, need barriers to their progress to be removed. The EU would be better placed focusing on issues such as the need for improved and State-funded childcare, particularly in certain member states, she added. According to a Commission report in 2008, Malta, Slovakia, Lithuania, Czech Republic and Poland have poor child support and childcare facilities. Ireland has also suffered from low investment in this area despite a particularly high birth rate.
Commenting on her speech, Nikki Sinclaire said: "We have seen a recent Court of Justice decision on car insurance that boycotts traditional, tried-and-tested and sensible methods of risk assessment.
Despite the EU's stance to positively discriminate in the favour of women, this case exemplifies a politically-correct, Euro-babble and entirely potty decision that actually makes life more difficult -- and expensive - for women. Common sense is an anathema to the EU." "Let's encourage and facilitate equality of treatment and opportunity regardless of gender. That is real equality".

PREPARING A DISCUSSION IS FUNDAMENTAL:

THIS MUST BE DONE IN TWO DIRECTIONS:
FIRST, YOU NEED TO LEARN NEW VOCABULARY AND EXPRESSIONS THAT YOU WILL HAVE TO USE FOR THE DISCUSSION.
SECONDLY, YOU HAVE TO PREPARE THE TOPIC BY LOOKING UP INFORMATION IN THE INTERNET, BOOKS, ENCYCLOPAEDIAS.
THIS WAY YOU WILL FEEL MUCH MORE CONFIDENT AND AT THE SAME TIME YOU WILL HAVE MUCH MORE TO TALK ABOUT.

FINAL TASK:

HERE IS ONE FINAL TASK THAT YOU MAY DO IN ORDER TO COVER THE FOUR SKILLS YOU SHOULD FOCUS ON WHEN LEARNING A LANGUAGE: LISTENING, READING, SPEAKING AND WRITING.

Write a composition and leave it in the blog as a comment to Session 27, I will edit it in the blog so that everybody can learn from other people´s opinions. Choose one of these two options:
  • Advantages and disadvantages of Positive Discrimination
  • Do you think women should be referees at men´s football matches? Express your opinion.

  1. Mens sana in corpore sano, if you feel happy with your appearance then your mind feels happy too. From this point of view if cosmetic surgery can help people to improve their physical aspect they will get a better quality of life.

At first sight it is easy to think that this kind of surgery is very useful and most of us can get the advantage of this, but in my opinion there are several important disadvantages:

    - This new techniques are not still well developed and people can have bad results at the end or not wished secondary effects.
    - The results you get with cosmetic surgery are not permanent but patients usually have to have new operation in the following years.
    - These treatments are very expensive and not everybody can afford them.
    - There are some specialists in the cosmetic surgery field we could call ‘not very skilled’ what makes you feel unsure if you place yourself in their hands.

In short, I am in favour of cosmetic surgery if you need it or like it but I am going to wait some time so that better techniques and professionals exist and maybe this surgery will be cheaper or I will be rich in the future.

  2. Years ago, there have been lots of social groups which have been discriminated. All of them did not have rights like voting, education, getting job, etc. But now, society is changing and politicians and governments are supporting new rules to give opportunities these people to integrate in jobs such as: politic, economic, and all sort of different works. But several concerns over these statements appear, so it leads us to wonder whether the people who get these occupations are really proud about the way they obtain them.

We can focus in women. They have been discriminated for long time due to sexism. They have got their rights little by little but nowadays, they do not need any help to begin with whatever idea you can imagine in the same way a man does. According to several researches, the number of women at university is incredibly higher than men and they get their degrees in less time than men do. Due to these abilities, women do not need any help to achieve their goals. Furthermore, everybody knows about competition in recent life, if you get something with help, it will not value the true effort it really has so in this case I do not find necessary that women need positive discrimination at all.

On the other hand, there are other social groups which need help to integrate in society. A clear examples might be people who have a physical or mental disability. It is known that these group of people might not develop their skills without being helped by organizations which teach them to organize their lives by themselves, besides they are taught to develop several jobs according to their abilities. So governments should invest money in these population and positive discrimination would be clearly justified.

On balance, in recent times there are groups of people who do not need any help to achieve whatever they were their proposal, although in the past it was completely different but now positive discrimination would not help them. On the contrary there are other groups which without help, their future would be very hard and uncertainty.
