SESSION 13: EXERCISES FOR DISCUSSION AND FINAL TASK

SESSION 13: EXERCISES FOR DISCUSSION AND FINAL TASK

2.1. PENSIONER CRIME DISCUSSION:Here are some questions you can try asking yourself before you come to our discussion on Wednesday:
a) What reasons or possible reasons does the text give for the increase in crime rate of pensioners?
b) What do you think is the reason for the increase in the amount of pensioners being convicted?
c) Do you think this increase is also happening in Spain? Do you think this is a normal development of our modern society?
d) With a steadily ageing population, do you think we should reconsider areas like: health care, education, pensions, work places, housing, transport, etc? What things should change from your point of view?
e) What is the current retirement age in your country? Should the retirement age be different for men and woman? Why? Should the retirement age be different for different types of jobs? Why?
f) Do you think the retirement age is finally going to change in Spain? Do you agree with this?
g) When you retire, how would you like to spend your retirement?
h) Do you think people who retire now use their free time differently to twenty years ago? Why?
i) Do you think a person who retires has the possibility to enjoy life? Does the government cover pensioners'  necessities?

2.2. Go to http://www.saga.co.uk/ and make a note of ten things that Saga offers the over 50s. Is there a similar organization in your country?
  • If you have a look at this webpage you will see that it is a very practical one for pensioners, giving advice for different areas like: money, health, home and lifestyle, travel and leisure, and even love. Their Saga Zone gives the possibility of messages, friends, forums, messages, blogs, clubs, etc.
PREPARING A DISCUSSION IS FUNDAMENTAL:

THIS MUST BE DONE IN TWO DIRECTIONS:
FIRST, YOU NEED TO LEARN NEW VOCABULARY AND EXPRESSIONS THAT YOU WILL HAVE TO USE FOR THE DISCUSSION.
SECONDLY, YOU HAVE TO PREPARE THE TOPIC BY LOOKING UP INFORMATION IN THE INTERNET, BOOKS, ENCYCLOPAEDIAS.
THIS WAY YOU WILL FEEL MUCH MORE CONFIDENT AND AT THE SAME TIME YOU WILL HAVE MUCH MORE TO TALK ABOUT.

FINAL TASK:

HERE IS ONE FINAL TASK THAT YOU MAY DO IN ORDER TO COVER THE FOUR SKILLS YOU SHOULD FOCUS ON WHEN LEARNING A LANGUAGE: LISTENING, READING, SPEAKING AND WRITING.

Write a composition and leave it in the blog as a comment to Session 13, I will edit it in the blog so that everybody can learn from other people´s opinions. Choose one of these two options:
  • 'The ageing of population doesn´t imply a change in the retirement age'. Express your opinion.
  • When you retire, how would you like to spend your retirement?

  1. Nowadays, the number of elders are increasing in developed countries, and it leads us to think about some questions such as, will new generations be able to look after the old ones in the future? It is a question that will be answered by itself in the future.

People’s life careers are very long. The majority of people spend almost all their lives working, even sometimes they work more than forty years. Many old people cannot run their tasks properly when they are older than sixty-five years old. By that I mean that they used to do hard activities which are very difficult to do to old people recently, for example, either labour or mind works. As a result of their life work, many of them are unhealthy because of their employments. It is the reason why they usually have illnesses and now they have to visit the doctors frequently.

On the other hand, lots of elders need help when they become retired. They do not earn much money so some of them have to ask for help. On the contrary, if they could have a part time job, they would help themselves getting extra money. In my opinion, in this way, they could live better. Another point of view is that they may teach the youth. Young people might be touched to develop their skills quickly.

On balanced, due to different factors, the retirement age will be changed sooner than later, because many aged will not be able to live with the government pension, so someone may have part time jobs and gets extra money or they may help young people to learn a job. Other elders will retire because of illnesses or similar situations so some of them will not finish their last days happily.

  2. When I retire I would like to have good health. For the rest (enjoying life, family and friends), I am certain that I would take good care of.
I would not like to retire at 67 years old. In my opinion, life is to be spent equally working and enjoying it. The best years of your life are spent at work because the younger you are the better and stronger worker you are. So, you are entitled to retire in optimal conditions to be free to enjoy some years at your way. There is no point in taking the retirement when someone has to take care of you.
Once that you do not have to worry about your future, work, children or mortgage it is the time to concentrate just on you. For that reason, it is quite important to have learnt in your youth how to spend your time apart from work. It means find pleasure in your hobbies, travelling or practicing sports. Nevertheless, it is equally important the quality and quantity of friends you have acquired in your life…...You may have lack of time, but that is exactly what the government should not take from you.
It is said that money doesn’t give you happiness but it helps. I would like not to have any worries economically because it makes a big difference when you have time but no money to kill it. I want to think in a positive way. So, the actual retirement conflict would not affect us in the future. It would be solved without reducing the retired people’s income.
All in all, I hope to have done things properly in order to enjoy those years in peace, company and enough money to live comfortably.

  3. I hope I will be able to retire one day because that is not clear enough these days, if we are paying attention to news about when workers will be able to retire in the near future.

As a whole, this situation has a paradoxical overtone because we will have to do what our politicians finally enacted, if we want to get a pension in our retirement, whereas they will only need to work a few years in order to get it, curious? Or maybe, amazing? As always, our politicians practise what they preach.

I think people of our generation see things differently than our parents and grandparents in general. They worked very hard all their lives and when they reached retirement, they were not sure what to do with so much free time. However, our generation is conscious of our free time and how we want to spend it. So, in case I could retire I think that I would do lots of things like sailing, fishing, going for a walk, travelling, cycling, etc.

To sum up, I will enjoy doing things that they will improve my lifestyle and trying to end my life in the best possible way.
