SESSION 26: ALBERT EINSTEIN QUOTE OF THE DAY

SESSION 26: ALBERT EINSTEIN QUOTE OF THE DAY

He who can no longer pause to wonder
and stand rapt in awe,
is as good as dead;
his eyes are closed.
Albert Einstein

I´m not totally convinced that it was Albert Einstein who wrote or said this but nevertheless, it´s food for thought.

You can leave your comments, they are all welcome.

SESSION 26: A SONG

SESSION 26: A SONG
STING: THE SHAPE OF MY HEART

This is a beautiful and simple song sang by a real artist:

Lyrics:
'SKRMotionPictures' says in one of his comments: 'the song is about a man who is a master card-player but plays to find some divine, almost spiritual meaning to the probabilities of the game. He is so involved in the game that he is almost emotionless, and this affects his relationships aversely."And if I told you that I loved you, you'd maybe think there's something wrong.."He isn't a man used to expressing his feelings, but he wants to. However he knows that he is only a man of one "face", which is the "mask" he hides behind, his poker-face.'

This song belongs to the album 'Ten Summoner's Tales', which is the fourth solo studio album by the rock musician Sting. The title is a combined pun of his given name, Gordon Sumner, and a character in Geoffrey Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales, the summoner. Released in 1993, it explores themes of love and morality in a noticeably upbeat mood compared to his previous release, the introspective 'The Soul Cages'.
This album contained two U.S. hits; "If I Ever Lose My Faith in You" and "Fields of Gold".
Ten Summoner's Tales was nominated for the Mercury Prize in 1993. In 1994, it was nominated for five Grammy awards, winning Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical, Best Male Pop Vocal Performance ("If I Ever Lose My Faith in You") and Best Long Form Music Video. It lost Album of the Year and Record of The Year for the above mentioned song.

SESSION 25: EXERCISES FOR DISCUSSION AND FINAL TASK

SESSION 25: EXERCISES FOR DISCUSSION AND FINAL TASK

2. EXERCISES FOR DISCUSSION

2.1 SCANDAL: Talk about scandals in different aspects of society. Tell what happened and how you felt about it:

  • sport
  • politics
  • a celebrity

2.2 RESPECT: Who do you respect most? Rank them, the person getting more respect goes at the top:

  • parents
  • best friends
  • your country´s leader
  • charity workers/volunteers
  • religious leaders
  • successful business people
  • people in the military
  • teachers

2.3 CHILD ABUSE: Here is a definition of child abuse taken from an encyclopedia:

Child abuse is the physical, psychological or sexual maltreatment of children. While most child abuse happens in the child's home, a significant portion also occurs in organizations involving children, such as churches, schools, child care businesses, and residential schools.
There are many forms of abuse and neglect and many governments have developed their own legal definition of what constitutes child maltreatment for the purposes of removing a child and/or prosecuting a criminal charge. In the United States, the Federal Government puts out a full definition of child abuse and neglect and creates a summary of each State definition. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) defines child maltreatment as any act or series of acts or commission or omission by a parent or other caregiver that results in harm, potential for harm, or threat of harm to a child. Examples of acts of commission include physical, sexual, and psychological abuse. Examples of acts of omission include failure to provide (physical, emotional, medical/dental, or educational neglect) or failure to supervise (inadequate supervision, or exposure to violent environments.)

  • Is there anything you read which you didn´t know before?
  • Did you know about the acts of commission and omission? Do you agree with the definition given here?

Neglect represents 54% of confirmed cases of child abuse, physical abuse 22%, sexual abuse 8%, emotional maltreatment 4%, and other forms of maltreatment 12%.
According to a recent UNICEF report on child well-being in the United States and the United Kingdom ranked lowest among first world nations with respect to the well being of their children. This study also found that child neglect and child abuse are far more common in single-parent families than in families where both parents are present. Recently a study conducted by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention found that 1 in 50 infants in the United States are victims of nonfatal neglect or abuse. In the US, neglect is defined as the failure to meet the basic needs of children including housing, clothing, food and access to medical care. Researchers found over 91,000 cases of neglect over the course of one year (from October 2005- September 30, 2006) with their information coming from a database of cases verified by protective services agencies.

  • When you read these statistics, what are your feelings?
  • Do you think they are similar to the ones we have in Spain?
  • To read more about Roman Catholic sex abuse cases, have a look at the following link:

SESSION 25: TEXT FOR WEDNESDAY 28TH APRIL
PRESSURE ON CATHOLIC CHURCH MOUNTING

Text taken and adapted from:
http://www.breakingnewsenglish.com/

The text:
The Catholic Church is facing a huge number of lawsuits over claims of sexual abuse by priests. Added to this scandal are calls for Pope Benedict XVI to resign. News sources say the Pope knew about many of the cases of sexual abuse and rape but covered it up for decades. One American newspaper called this crisis the largest faced by the Church in centuries. The allegations centre on the Pope’s role as head of the Vatican office monitoring priestly misconduct. The Pope was then cardinal Joseph Ratzinger. Many people now say he failed to punish a priest called Lawrence Murphy, who abused as many as 200 boys at a school in Wisconsin in the USA. One of the victims, Donald Marshall, said “The Pope is a fraud and a hypocrite.”
The media is reporting on more and more cases of cover-ups by the Catholic Church. Many scandals have broken out in Ireland, Australia, the USA and Mexico. The Vatican has fought back at those trying to force the Pope to resign. Officials released a statement attacking people for their “aggressive persistence… to involve the Holy Father personally in the matter of abuse”. The official said the Pope’s record was “above discussion” and that no one would comment any further. It will be difficult for people to win lawsuits against the Vatican because it is a country and it has immunity from US lawsuits. A lawyer, Jeff Anderson, has managed to start a law case in the USA. He told reporters that “this is the first foot in the door.”

SESSION 23: A SONG

SESSION 23: A SONG
JAMES BLUNT: YOU´RE BEAUTIFUL

The song:

The lyrics:

Song meaning:
James Blunt explained that the song was written about his ex-girlfriend. He saw her in the London subway after they broke up and she was seeing someone else. She's beautiful!! They exchange stares (looks) but do not speak. Apparently, she dumped him (left him) because he had a drug problem.

In the unedited lyrics he says, "she could tell by my face that I was fucking high!!!" (under the effects of drugs). So he says he’s seen her with another man but he won't lose no sleep on that because he's got a plan... Right he's just going to commit suicide (brave plan, uh?). So in the video he’s freezing standing in the snow by a cliff, where he takes off all his clothes, takes everything out of his pockets (including his soldier identification plate, as a goodbye letter), and jumps off the cliff. He’d rather die than live without that girl anymore.

Some expressions explained:
Notice the pronunciation of the intervocalic T in the word "beautiful" and how the vowel in the syllable "-ful" /fəl/ is pronounced with a schwa, not with the vowel in COOK. The same pronunciation of the T is found in other intervocalic T's as in: "of thaT I'm sure", "I've goT a plan", "thaT I was", "when she thoughT up", "buT it's time".

brilliant: fantastic (also "brill" in colloquial youngster's British English)

"My love is pure"- Notice the pronunciation of the word "love" and "pure"

subway: an underground passage under a street or a road. In America it's the word for the underground or tube. For some strange reason, in this song, the British singer uses "subway" with the American meaning because he says "on the subway" (on + public transport: on the bus, on the ship, on the plane, on the train, on the subway), so he means that they met inside the train of the underground.

I won't lose no sleep: a double negative is not correct in standard English, but we sometimes hear it in colloquial English (this sentence should be "I won't lose any sleep on that" or "I will lose no sleep on that") : I'm not worried about it

she caught my eye: I saw her and she got my attention, her vision made me interested.

to think up: to plan

Remember that in BrE the R is only pronounced before vowels. Notice there's no /r/ in words like: pure, sure, another, you're, never. But in "from" and "her again" it is pronounced because it is followed by a vowel

SESSION 22: A VISIT TO THE ALCAZABA

SESSION 22: A VISIT TO THE ALCAZABA

DAY: WEDNESDAY 7TH APRIL
MEETING POINT: PUERTA PURCHENA
TIME: 18:30
OUR GUIDE: TERESA

Hi everybody, as we said in our last oral session, this Wednesday is going to be special. We are going to visit the Alcazaba of Almería and Teresa is going to be our English guide. I recommend you to have a look at the different information you can find in the internet about the Alcazaba and Almería as a CITY FOR TOURISTS.

Here are some things I found:

History
In 995 Almería gained the title of medina ("city") by caliph Abd ar-Rahman III construction of the defensive citadel, located in the upper sector of the city, began in this period. The alcazaba, provided not only with walls and towers but also with squares, houses and a mosque, was to be also the seat of the local government, commanding the city and the sea nearby.
The complex was enlarged under caliph Al-Mansur and, later, under Al-Jairan, first king of then independent taifa of Almería (1012-1028).
Overview
First line of walls:
It is a wide enclosure corresponding to the first Muslim military camp, used as shelter for the population in case of siege. For this task it was provided with large rainwater tanks.
Second line of walls:
The first enclosure is separated by the second one by the so-called Muro de la Vela ("Wall of the Sail"), taking its name from a bell that warned the population in case of events such as the arrival of a ship in the port, danger, fires etc. This wall was built by King Charles III of Spain.
The second enclosure was the residence for the governors, their soldiers and their servants. It included also the mosue, baths, tanks, tents etc.
Third line of walls:
the third enclosure, the more external, is also the most modern in the complex. After the Christian conquest of Almería, the Catholic kings Isabella of Castile and Ferdinand I of Aragon has a castle built in the most elevated sector of the town, more apt to resist to the new powder artillery.

SESSION 22: A SONG

SESSION 22: A SONG
BOYCE AVENUE : BECAUSE OF YOU

This is a cover by Boyce Avenue, a group which is promoting itself through the internet:

The original song is by Ne-Yo:

Lyrics:
Want to, but I can´t help it
I love the way it feels,
It´s got me stuck between my fantasy and what is real
I need it when I want it, I want it when I don´t
Tell myself I´ll stop everyday, knowing that I won't
I got a problem and I don´t know what to do about it
Even if I did, I don´t know if I would quit but I doubt it
I´m taken by the thought of it,
and I know this much is true
Baby, you
have become my addiction,
I´m so strung out on you
I can barely move
but I like it
And it´s all because of you [3X]
And it´s all because
I Never get enough,
She´s the sweetest girl
Think of it every second
I can't get nothing done,
Only concern is the next time, I´m gonna get me some
Know I should stay away from, cause it's no good for me
I try and try but my obsession won´t let me leave
I got a problem and I don´t know what to do about it
Even if I did, I don´t know if I would quit but I doubt it
I´m taken by the thought of it,
and I know this much is true
Baby, you
have become my addiction,
I´m so strung out on you
I can barely move
but I like it
And it´s all because of you [3X]
