The film INVICTUS is a biographical drama film based on Nelson Mandela´s life during the 1995 Rugby World Cup. If you have not seen the film read about it in:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Invictus_(film)

The film is titled after a poem mentioned several times in the film also titled invictus. It is a short poem by the English poet William Ernest Henley, written in 1875. It originally bore no title. The familiar title INVICTUS (Latin for UNCONQUERED) was added by Arthur Quiller-Couch, when he included the poem in The Oxford Book Of English Verse (1900).

Out of the night that covers me,

Black as the pit from pole to pole,

I thank whatever gods may be

For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance

I have not winced or cried aloud.

Under the bludgeonings of chance

My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears

Looms but the Horror of the shade,

And yet the menace of the years

Finds and shall find me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,

How charged with punishments the scroll,

I am the master of my fate:

I am the captain of my soul.

PREPARING A DISCUSSION IS FUNDAMENTAL:

THIS MUST BE DONE IN TWO DIRECTIONS:

FIRST, you need to learn new vocabulary and expressions that you will have to use for the discussion.

SECOND, you have to prepare the topic by looking up information in the internet, books and encyclopaedias.

This way you will feel much more confident and at the same time you will have much more to talk about.

FINAL TASK

Here is one final task that you may do in order to cover the four skills you should focus on when learning a language: LISTENING, READING, SPEAKING AND WRITING.

Write a composition on one of these two topics and leave it in the blog as a comment to Session 21:

  • Nelson Mandela´s life symbolises 'invictus', therefore he deserved the Nobel Peace Prize. Express your opinion.
  • Film Review: Invictus

  1. From the distance, without knowing much about South Africa and Mandela, and after reading some articles about them, it is easy to see that Mandela’s life has been admirable in many aspects.

Apart from Mandela’s Life, his country, South Africa, is a rare country, different from the rest in Africa, where its political system in first place allowed to let white people have supremacy over black ones just until 20 years ago, and in second place to set up an economic system similar to Western countries one. Those ingredients make South Africa a country with hard challenges to overcome but with many advantages and opportunities to do it.

Talking about Mandela and his merits to get Nobel Peace Prize, if we add his strength to keep fighting for his ideals even after stay forty years in prison, to the difficulty to get good results in his country, I think at least he deserves it more than others who have recently got it.
