PREPARING A DISCUSSION IS FUNDAMENTAL. What do I think about the Nobel Peace Prize? Mister Alfred Nobel was a very talented man who invented dynamite: a powerful explosive –nitroglycerine – was under control, giving miners a safer tool for his work. As usual, nations made a different use of his invention: transformed it in a terrific weapon. With the money Nobel won, founded these well known prizes. He wanted to acknowledge the efforts and achievements of men, women and organizations from all over the world, in the fields of medicine, chemistry, physics, literarure and peace keeping. This was his last will: to help others who made mankind better. Of course Nobel was a pacifist, but in the nineteen century way: let’s make weapons so powerful and efficient that wars end in a minute. Twentieth century gave us many reasons to think about peace and war in a very different manner: “ There is no way to peace. Peace is the way” (A.J. Muste) Peace is not merely the absence of violence or aggression: it implies respect, justice, equity, cultural, diversity, freedom… the assumption of human rights.
