SESSION 20: EXERCISES FOR DISCUSSION AND FINAL TASK

2. EXERCISES FOR DISCUSSION:

  • burgers
  • pizza
  • kebabs
  • french fries
  • sandwiches
  • tapas
  • other...
2.2 SUPER-SIZE: Perhaps it´s not the 'quality' but the 'quantity' that we should pay attention to. Look at these Super-size dishes:

  • liter of ice cream with cream
  • fried breakfast with a dozen eggs

  • liter of cheese fondue
  • 2 kg donut cake

a) What did you think when you read the headline? Could you believe your ears?
b) What springs to mind when you hear the word ‘burger’?
c) What do you think about what you read?
d) Would you like to try the Triple Bypass Burger?
e) Should such burgers be banned?
f) What do you think of the Heart Attack Grill restaurant?

i) Do you have any sympathy for the man who had a heart attack?
j) What do you think of burgers?
k) Did you like reading this article?
l) What do you think of the restaurant’s approach to dining?
m) Do you think restaurants such as the Heart Attack Grill could catch on?
n) What do you think of the idea of people eating for free if they weigh over 158 kg?
o) How important are burgers or pizzas in your life?
p) Would you be worried about an increase in your wardrobe size?
q) How healthy are hamburgers?
r) What is in your ideal burger?
s) Why do you think Mr Basso said ‘mild death” might occur?
t) What questions would you like to ask restaurant owner Jon Basso?

PREPARING A DISCUSSION IS FUNDAMENTAL:

THIS MUST BE DONE IN TWO DIRECTIONS:
FIRST, YOU NEED TO LEARN NEW VOCABULARY AND EXPRESSIONS THAT YOU WILL HAVE TO USE FOR THE DISCUSSION.
SECONDLY, YOU HAVE TO PREPARE THE TOPIC BY LOOKING UP INFORMATION IN THE INTERNET, BOOKS, ENCYCLOPAEDIAS.
THIS WAY YOU WILL FEEL MUCH MORE CONFIDENT AND AT THE SAME TIME YOU WILL HAVE MUCH MORE TO TALK ABOUT IN THE ORAL SESSION.

FINAL TASK:

HERE IS ONE FINAL TASK THAT YOU MAY DO IN ORDER TO COVER THE FOUR SKILLS YOU SHOULD FOCUS ON WHEN LEARNING A LANGUAGE: LISTENING, READING, SPEAKING AND WRITING.

Write a composition and leave it in the blog as a comment to Session 20, I will edit it in the blog so that everybody can learn from other people´s opinions:
  • 'Mens Sana in Corpore Sano', express your opinion.
  • Write a letter to Jon Basso telling him what you think about his restaurant: Heart Attack Grill Restaurant.

  1. Dear Mr. Basso,

I’ve just read your video on the Internet, causing me a lot of worry about the opinion you have about this important topic.

Firstly, everybody knows how dangerous is junk food because this food makes people put on weight quickly, hence they are sentenced to serious illnesses such as cardiopathy, diabetes, obesity, etc. So I find your business completely incomprehensible in current days.

Secondly, encouraging people to eat such awful food in order to have hamburgers for free is an irresponsible behaviour. The fact is that, although your clients can feel grateful for that, actually, you’re inviting them to pass away in the best of the cases or to stay in a wheelchair in the worst ones because their families will have to take care of them without any life’s quality.

Finally, in my opinion, you only think about earning as much money as you can, besides, you aren’t conscious about the damages you’re provoking to these people. If you considers the way you run your restaurant, lots of people will be healthier, despite the fact that you’d earn less money.

Well, That’s all for now. I’m looking forward to hearing from you soon.

    Yours sincerely

    Miguel Ruano

PS: I think you don’t taste the food you prepare, because you look fit and healthy.

  2. Today, our modern lifestyle and all the conveniences we are accustomed have made us more sedentary, this means that sitting around in front of the computer, taking the car to go shopping for even a short trip and using the lift instead of stairs have contributed to our inactivity. As a result, obesity now affects one third of the population and one in four suffers mental health problems at some point in their lives.

People in general, are oversensitive to the increasingly habit of smoking and the alcohol consumption, however we are unaware of the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle habit; of course it means to make too many changes in our daily life routines that can enhance our health, like eating habit and exercising.

One of the most beneficial changes to carry out is taking up any sort of activity because getting regular exercise prevents people from sleeping disorder mostly provoked by stress as a cause and effect of overworking, but the question is when or where to start.

We all know what a gym is: every month you pay money, you exercise indoors with machines, normally on you own, then you maybe become fitter, but all of a sudden, you abandon the whole training; in fact, physical activity does not have to be very hard; this goal can be achieved by building physical exercise bit by bit into a daily routine, because time is just effort.

The second problem to deal with is the change of our eating habits because a bad diet can alter the whole human’s organism and illnesses as diabetes, hypertension, back pain and in the worst case heart attack come up without prior waning. Furthermore, it can affect not only our body but our mind too since part of the emotional well-being begins with physical well-being.

Personally I reckon that the human- being needs to be active to be healthy so as not to become ankylosed, so if we were able to follow all the changes previously mentioned and capable to remove all annoying things and bad habits which hinder the state of mind and body, I am totally convinced that a great part of our troubles would diminish by ourselves without taking antidepressants.

So go ahead!!! Getting started is the hardest part.
